Work is set to begin on the cleanup of several East Bay parcels in downtown Olympia. IO Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. was awarded the construction contract with a bid of $657,155.13 plus Washington State Sales Tax.

Port-owned property located in downtown Olympia along the waterfront was historically used for a variety of industrial operations resulting in contamination of the sites. The Port’s prior collaboration with the Department of Ecology, LOTT, and the City of Olympia led to the successful cleanup and redevelopment of East Bay property which now hosts the Hands on Children’s Museum and the LOTT Clean Water Alliance’s headquarters.

The Port is now working with the Department of Ecology to cleanup the remaining portions of its downtown locations. The Port has led investigations of soil and groundwater contamination and developed a formal cleanup action plan. Once remediated, these sites will be available for mixed use development, including office, retail, commercial and hospitality.

Cleanup work will include:
·        Targeted removal and disposal of contaminated soil
·        Limited site grading to prepare for cover
·        Placement of a one foot thick gravel cover

During this work, there will be minor impacts to the public. Truck traffic around the remediated parcels will be minimal and all site work will be contained to the parcels. Cleanup is estimated to be complete by late October.
