Hallmark celebration gurus report that steel is the traditional eleventh anniversary gift. Personally, a steel gift wouldn’t guarantee eleven more happy years. I suggest joining in the celebration—and stocking up for future festivities—at the Medicine Creek Winery’s anniversary party instead.

A not-to-be-missed boutique winery, Medicine Creek is known for wowing visitors to its unique tasting room and producing award-winning wines. Their most notable vintages include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah as well as their gold-medal winner Stage Coach Red blend.

The tasting room is open Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and lucky tasters can watch the wine makers hard at work.

On Saturday, August 13, join owners Jim and Liz Myers in celebrating 11 successful years. From 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. party goers will enjoy food, music, and summer sunsets. Dinner includes two different types of paella, salad, fresh sweet corn, a glass of house-made wine, and dessert thanks to the skilled catering talents of Tony Judha.

Former Sheriff and Thurston County Commissioner candidate Gary Edwards will say a few words at 5:00 p.m. before the Myers’ introduce what Liz calls “two really popular local bands” the Edge Water Trio and the Ben Potter Band.

“I know both bands personally,” says Liz, “and they’ve been a big draw on previous visits.” During the music, attendees can purchase additional wine while they sit back, relax, and enjoy a glorious summer night.

Myers admits that busy summer schedules can make it difficult to both plan and attend events. But long evenings of fine dining, local music, and world class wine are something to look back on with contentment once winter rolls around and nights outdoors are less appealing.

Tickets for the anniversary dinner are $49.95 and can be purchased online, at the winery, or by calling 360-701-6284. Doors open at 3:00 p.m. with dinner served at 5:00 p.m. and music and mingling until 8:00 p.m. Buy your tickets early to guarantee seating and contact Liz with questions about the event or upcoming activities.

Wine vacations are all the rage in countries across the world. But according to the American Winery Guide, “The popularity of wine tasting in Washington State has grown exponentially in the past two decades.” Paste Magazine also agrees that “Washington is the second largest wine producing region in the US and, like many things in the Pacific Northwest, it’s an eccentric and fascinating scene that somewhat defies categorization…Washington is a younger wine region than Napa—or anywhere in Europe—but its diversity is startling and it’s a fascinating place to visit whether in person or by the glass.”

With its fully restored stagecoach, Scottish pub doors, and salvaged New Orleans floors, Medicine Creek Winery is definitely both eccentric and fascinating. Join the August 13 party and perhaps leave with a case of ways to celebrate your next anniversary…or surviving another long Monday.

The Medicine Creek Winery is located at 947 Old Pacific Highway SE in Olympia.
