In-Laws, check.  Kiddos, check.  Best friends, check.  Now what about all those other folks on your holiday list whom you really need to acknowledge, but aren’t sure about what to give?  Rob Backman of Ralph’s Thriftway is happy to help take some of the guesswork out of gift giving for acquaintances such as neighbors, hostesses, or even the boss.

Rob Backman, Beer and Wine Manager, is seriously enthusiastic about his offerings.  “I look for wineries that are not in every store, and the community around us knows they can come here (and get something unique.).  I do a lot of research.  I want wines that are quality, but at a great price,” he exclaims.  A quick look around Ralph’s wine section, and it’s evident that Rob means what he says.   Exclusive wines line the shelves alongside some trendy wines currently on the market.  Rob’s well-researched selections and affordable prices are what keep his customers coming back for more.

Washington State labels seem to dominate, and Rob is emphatic about their significance.  “I want local because the community is what keeps the lights on,” he explains while reminding readers that Bayview and Ralph’s Thriftway are locally owned grocery stores.  Benson and Lake Chelan wineries are two of his current local favorites.  “They are small wineries, as we are an independent grocery store.  If I can use my dollar to support them and vice versa, people are going to get out and try their wine.  They give us a reduced price. People can get a great $26 bottle of wine for $16.99 or a $30 bottle for $19.99.”

Keeping a small stash of stellar yet affordable wine on hand for last minute gifts can help take some of the stress of out the season.  For the hostess, Rob recommends hands down for the dollar, Benson Winery.   At under $20 a bottle, it is a reasonable yet exclusive buy.  Rob compares the quality to that of a $40-$60 bottle.  He also suggests any of the Columbia H-3’s, Donedei, St. Michelle, and L’Ecole.

For a more formal affair such as a dinner party, Rob recommends Walter Dacon.  Their Skookum Red normally runs about $25 but Ralph’s sells it for $19.99.  Their white and syrah are also terrific choices.   If looking to splurge, say on a favorite uncle or even the boss, Rob suggests a magnificent red blend by L’Ecole called Apogee.

When it comes to hosting guests this season, there are delicious selections available at every price point.  “Look for variety at a great price when throwing a holiday party.”  Rob recommends serving a good cab, a good zinfandel and/or a red blend, and there is always someone who is going to prefer a white.  “A chardonnay is a safe bet, but if you want to spice it up a little bit then a white blend, say from Benson or Lake Chelan, is great too,” he adds.

For those who buy a bottle and then decide it’s so good they want it for themselves, there are other gift choices available.  “Microbrews are insane right now.  From Deschutes to Elysian to Fish Tail, they are all on fire.”  Rob stocks a healthy selection of 22 ouncers.  Iron Horse Brewery is one of his personal favorites.

Wine aerators are also hot ticket items.  When asked whether or not they really make a difference, Rob is emphatic.   “An aerator livens it up and makes it taste different.  It’s like turning the lights on, and it makes the wine taste the way it’s supposed to taste.”  When it comes to fancy wine openers, Rob says old school is best.  Opening a bottle with a corkscrew is a little magical compared to opening one with a battery-operated machine.  “That’s anticlimactic!,” he argues.

Ralph’s and Bayview, fourth generation, family owned businesses, draw a wide variety of loyal and satisfied patrons.  “Without our customers, we don’t have a business,” exclaims Rob.  Buying and selling locally is very important to the Stormans family.  It’s a win-win situation for both the company and the community it serves.  Bayview’s monthly Friday Nights Uncorked is a fun way to try out some of their distinct local labels.
