Westport Winery, the 2022 Washington Winery of the Year, is now the seventh most platinum award-winning winery in the Northwest according to Great Northwest Wine Magazine’s winter edition. This news comes with the results of the Platinum Invitational Wine Competition held in November in Tri-Cities and includes all wineries in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia.
In its fourteen-year history, Westport’s wines have earned 37 platinum medals, seven of which were awarded at the 2022 event. This year, the winery brought home a remarkable 30 platinum and gold medals.
Coveted Double Platinum medals were awarded to Mermaid Merlot with a 96-point score and Courage Sagrantino with 97-points. The merlot grapes for this wine were harvested at Joe Hattrup’s famed Elephant Mountain Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA.
Winery founder, Blain Roberts, whose underwater photography graces the Mermaid Merlot label, said, “We have an amazing destination winery in an unlikely location. These awards are the best endorsement of our team’s efforts, and incredible encouragement to continue the level of quality for which we are known.” Roberts shares leadership of the company with his wife, Kim, and daughter, Carrie.
Platinum medals were given to Maritime Riesling with 94-points, Surfer Syrah with 93-points, Bella Sangiovese with 92-points, Duckleberry Grunt Blueberry Gewurztraminers with 92 points, and Dawn Patrol Raspberry Riesling with 92-points.
Double Gold medals, representing unanimous judges’ decisions, were bestowed upon two vintages of Tsunami, a Super Tuscan blend, two vintages of Smoky Nor’Wester, a Bordeaux blend, Lighthouse Riesling, Red Sky at Night Raspberry Chocolate wine, Message in a Bottle Grenache, Swimmer Petite Sirah, Little Wild Blackberry Riesling, Pineapple Express Pineapple Riesling, True Blue Malbec, Humu Humu Nuku Nuku Apua’a Rosé, and Bog Berry Blush Cranberry Gewurztraminer.
Gold medals were given to Peaches on the Beaches Peach Riesling, two vintages of Charterboat Chick Cabernet Sauvignon, Captain Gray Barrel Aged Chardonnay, Rapture of the Deep Sparkling Cranberry, Nirvana, a Grenache Syrah Mourvedre blend, Kraken Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiver Me Timbers, a Passionfruit, Orange, Guava Riesling, another vintage of Tsunami Super Tuscan, and Willapa, a Riesling Pinot Gris blend.
Westport Winery Garden Resort is located halfway between Aberdeen and Westport on the Washington Coast. In addition to the winery tasting room and gift shop, the 21-acre property boasts 15-acres of display gardens with over 60 outdoor sculptures by local artists, the award-winning Sea Glass Grill, Ocean’s Daughter Distillery, the International Mermaid Museum, and beginning in April, Vineyards By-The-Sea will include two vacation rentals in addition to Ocean’s Daughter Seaside Retreat in Oregon.
