Two words that cause most people to wince nervously are “exercise” and “money.” Both are great, if you’ve already achieved them. But for most of us they’re areas that could use a little help. But you don’t have to tackle either alone. Having a knowledgeable, encouraging buddy beside you almost guarantees success. Locally, Peninsula Credit Union and the South Sound YMCA have partnered to provide financial and physical fitness for the community.

Peninsula Credit Union has been a dedicated part of the Olympic Peninsula and Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson, Clallam and Grays Harbor counties since 1935. “Peninsula Credit Union is dedicated to the financial well-being of our community, as we share common interests and goals for being financially fit,” says Director of Marketing Billy Thomas. “That is why we listen, serve, educate, and care, always!”

Over the years Thomas and other staff have noticed their members may be in need when it comes to money know-how. “Peninsula Credit Union is dedicated to promoting community development,” he says. “By listening to people, serving their financial needs with affordable financial services, educating to create a personal development plan, we demonstrate our care to enrich their lives and helping to achieve financial stability” This education took the shape of free Financial Health services with their new Community Financial Educator Darrell McVea. “It does not matter where you were, but where you’re going. Peninsula desires to help you get there.”

One of the first steps McVea suggests is for folks to start tracking where their money is going, he says. “Once you see where your money is going, you can properly start a budget, and plan for known expenses while saving for unforeseeable ones.” And if you have fallen behind, trying to decide whether to save, pay off debt or repair your credit, they suggest saving. “Pay yourself first,” he adds. “Be prepared for life’s unexpected opportunities.”

Finances can feel truly daunting. It may seem that once you’re in a hole it’s tough to get out again. If that story sounds familiar, McVea more than understands. His approach is simple and welcoming. “’Based on where you are coming from, I can see why you would say that,’” McVea says this is what he says to his clients when they meet to discuss financial health services. “‘Where would you like to be? If you partner with me, we can change that.’”

Whether you’re a longstanding member of Peninsula Credit Union or just starting out, look through their BALANCE resources to read about the basics of personal finance, find free interactive webinars and online tools and even help prevent identity theft. Peninsula also offers a Second Chance program to help combat the unexpected and make a fresh start. Simply call 800.426.1601 or stop into a nearby branch to learn more.

Sarah Clinton, Executive Director of Advancement for the South Sound YMCA, understands that life often throws us a curveball, but organizations can help you hit that ball out of the park. “Each individual and organization has a different set of skills and talents they can bring to the table,” she encourages. “We know that in order to move our community forward, we must work together.” That’s why we partner with other community organizations like Peninsula Credit Union.

McVea agrees. At the end of the day, he and the Peninsula team just want folks to know that they are not alone. “Partner with me, share your goals and dreams and be honest with yourself,” he says. “Stay focused on the process. It does not matter where you’ve been. It matters where you are going. Remember, this is not a sprint, it is a marathon.”

If you’re looking for a new banking home, it’s easy to join Peninsula at any time. Membership is simple: live, work, worship, or go to school in Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson, Clallam or Grays Harbor counties, or have a family member who is a current member and you’re good to go. Sign up online or stop into a local branch to enroll.

“Peninsula is a local credit union dedicated to serving our local communities,” says Thomas. “And Peninsula is member-owned, so when you join, you truly become a part of the credit union. We welcome everyone in our community to join and take advantage of the benefits of membership.”

While you’re at it, swing by one of the South Sound YMCA’s branches for a tour. What Peninsula does for your finances, the YMCA can do for your health and wellbeing. They’re truly an example of how partnerships benefit everyone in and around a community. Grow stronger together in 2022, a fresh start just requires taking that very first step.
