The Promising Young Writers Program represents NCTE’s commitment to early and continuing work in the development of writing. The school-based writing program was established in 1985 to stimulate and recognize writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among eighth-grade students. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada, as well as American schools abroad and the Virgin Islands, are eligible to nominate students for the writing program.

This year, 163 students were nominated. Of that number, 67 received the highest award, Certificates of Recognition, and 96 received Certificates of Participation. Each student submitted two pieces of writing. Two independent judges evaluated each submission for content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.

Samantha Chandler, her Language Arts teacher said “Phoebe has repeatedly demonstrated her passion, talent, and dedication to the craft of writing through a variety of genres this year, including short-fiction, poetry, essays, and spoken word. She pushes herself to share her perceptions of the world around her, as well as taking on the perspectives of characters who appear very different from her. This is her second national recognition this year, and I have no doubt it is just one of many she will earn in her lifetime.”
