Jeff and Abbie Rose have been small business owners in Olympia since 2011, when they took over Metro Body Piercing. In October of 2013, they took on their newest venture – ownership of Bagel Brothers, a longtime community staple for fresh bagels, sandwiches and more.
Now, the Rose’s, who have two young daughters, are happy to help celebrate Bagels Brothers’ 21st birthday. On Saturday, July 18, from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., plain or cheese bagels are just 21 cents, as well as 21-cent fountain drinks and a buy-one-get-one free special on iced espresso.
“We’re excited that Bagel Brothers has been a part of the community for over 20 years – part of the reason we purchased the store is to continue that tradition,” says Jeff. “We look forward to another 20 years.”
From daily specials like “Sleepy Sunday” which gets you a free coffee with any purchase and “Two Punch Tuesday” where customers get double punches on food and drink cards, Bagel Brothers has always been an affordable option to eat delicious, local food. (Doesn’t last week’s special – cream cheese, sprouts, red onions, cucumbers, and jalapenos on a triple berry bagel – sound delicious?)
“Everything we make is fresh. We have always been committed to no preservatives in our bagels,” says Jeff. “We try to get as much as we can locally, like Shepherd’s grain flour from small farmers. Eastern Washington is as close as you can get for flour, so it gives us the opportunity to keep costs low rather than paying for it to ship cross-country.”
Whether it’s the sharing of local art on their walls (anyone can approach us about hanging their art, says Jeff) hosting in-store book readings, or donating bagels to non-profits, another part of Bagel Brothers’ legacy is their community involvement.
“Something every small business owner has to do is compete with mega corporations,” explains Abbie, “…so something we do to make us stand out is being involved in the community. It makes us remain small, community centered and relevant. It allows us to do things that corporations don’t and hopefully shows our community that we’re here and supportive – and that our money stays here.”
