Flamenco casa patasOnce again Olympia’s Washington Center for Performing Arts is privileged to host a distinguished music and dance performance from Spain. With their annual United States tour,  Conservatorio Fundación Flamenco Casa Patas of Madrid, Spain, is in pursuit of its mission to promote the unique art of flamenco — which was recently recognized by UNESCO as a “Contribution… and Cultural Heritage of Humanity”—not only to perform but also teach  flamenco worldwide.

This program is supported by the Government of Spain through its Honorary Consul in Seattle, which brings over 120 cultural events from Spain to the Northwest, including Seattle Art Museum, Benaroya Hall and Town Hall in Seattle, Meany Hall/UW, and Olympia. This, their 5th appearance in Olympia, introduces two new dancers here for their performance:

This year, Casa Patas presents Flamenco(s) of Lead and Copper.

Accompanied by talented cantaores and musicians, the explosive dances of Mariana Collado and Carlos Chamorro lead us into the mysterious world of flamenco — with an allusion to metallurgy, in which primitive elements are extracted, refined and fused to new strengths and grandeur.

Mariana Collado, creator of this program, is a graduate of the Royal Professional Dance Conservatory of Spain and has performed widely with many eminent flamenco artists, including Cristina Hoyos and Antonia Gades, ranging from intimate tablaos in Spain to prestigious international festivals.

Carlos Chamorro’s acclaim both as dancer and choreographer led to his position of soloist and principal dancer of the Spanish National Ballet, and recognition as “ambassador” of Spanish dance internationally, on stages from Moscow to New York. He has received major awards throughout his career, including Spain’s “Most Outstanding Dancer Prize – 2012”.
