olympia home remodelA lot of us have mixed feelings about working with a contractor. For whatever reason we think they’re out to scam us. We forget that many in the construction business are honest people who depend on word of mouth for their livelihood.

“Once you’ve signed that contract it’s time to let your guard down,” says John Erwin. He’s been in the business for 20 years and knows a thing or two about what works. “We need to work as a team. The homeowner is just as important in the process and if you don’t work as a team that’s when people butt heads or get confused.”

That means being clear with what you want and asking lots of questions. Don’t assume your contractor knows everything you’re thinking. However, once you’ve explained your needs it’s a good idea to relax and your contractor work. You can always check on progress and make sure things are being done to your standards.

Of course this means you’ve already picked a contractor you like and trust. A good relationship is critical to helping the project be a success. To see John’s advice about picking a contractor click on the link.
