The Olympia Timberland Library is throwing a block party to kick off its 2013 Summer Reading Program. An afternoon of family programs and activities begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22 in and behind the library out on 9th Ave. and across the street at the Fertile Ground Guesthouse Garden.

1 – 1:40 p.m. – The Pacific Science Center’s Rock & Roll Science Show in the Library atrium

Earthquakes and volcanoes, rocks and fossils. Delve into the deepest layers of the earth to learn about sparkling crystals, magnetic rocks, and earthquakes. Explore ancient history when you step into a dinosaur footprint and hear a story from a fossil’s perspective. Find out which rocks glow and how we use them in our daily lives. Audience participation and giant props will make the science pop with excitement. Sponsored by the Friends of the Olympia Library.

2 p.m. – Family Story Time with South Sound Reading Foundation, in the Fertile Ground Garden

Join volunteers from the South Sound Reading Foundation for story time in the enchanting Fertile Ground Guesthouse Garden across the street from the library on 9th and Adams.

3 – 4 p.m. – Story Time with Nikki McClure, in the Library atrium

Children’s book author and illustrator Nikki McClure will share her latest book, “How to Be a Cat,” and talk a bit about what it’s like to be an artist. Books will be available for purchase.

1 – 4 p.m. – BlockFest, with Thurston County Early Childhood Coalition, in the Library meeting room

Bring the young ones to a room filled with blocks of all kinds. BlockFest is a block building extravaganza for children ages 8 months to 8 years and their parents. Block play helps children develop early math, science, and literacy skills in a way that’s fun for them—and their parents.

Creative crafts, free books and summer reading program signups. Pick up a complete program and map at the event.
