A toddler plays in the Good For You gallery at the New Hands On Children’s Museum. A family membership makes a great holiday gift.

My sister sent me an article over the weekend identifying herself in a newly defined demographic – PANK – Professional Aunt No Kids.  Both of my sisters are fantastic aunts to their two nieces and one nephew.  They dote on the kids, have patience for endless block towers and dressing dolls, and seem able to identify just the right amount of sparkle and glamour to impress a six-year-old.

Since they live in New York City and Los Angeles, they don’t get to see the kids as much as we would all prefer.  As a result, when it comes to gift giving, they sometimes need some advice

And, what better gift for Olympia area families than a membership to the New Hands On Children’s Museum?  An endless supply of fun, adventure, and activities for the next year is a great way for aunts, uncles, grandparents and other family members to give a gift of experience.

The New Museum is chock full of fantastic galleries that will challenge kids from birth to 12 years old.  A wide open art studio is the perfect space for budding artists to create masterpieces.  Chefs can serve (play) meals to parents and friends.  Future veterinarians can visit the Woodland Animal Rescue Center.  Whatever your child’s destined career or current interest, the Museum is set to entertain and educate through creative play.

Families have left a lasting legacy with fish lining the first floor hallway of the New Hands On Children’s Museum. Photo courtesy of Aaron Barna.

To leave a lasting legacy, consider buying a fish which honors a child, family, business, or special occasion.  Your name will be placed on a fish which swims along the first floor wall celebrating the opening of the New Museum.  The Salmon Run is a way for grandparents and family members to support a legacy of learning in Thurston County.

Just when I feel like the kids’ rooms are overflowing with toys, our ThurstonTalk writers come up with a whole list of “experiences” that serve as excellent gifts, support local businesses, and keep consumption down.  The Hands On Children’s Museum membership is one example.

When your child’s PANK is in town, hand over the HOCM membership card and send them off for a day of joy.
