On behalf of the Alliance of Earth, Sky & Water Protectors and House of Tears Carvers (Lummi), you are invited to join the latest totem pole journey to help defend and protect Chi’chil Biłdagoteel (also known as Oak Flat), a sacred site for the Apache, as well as the Zuni, Yavapai, O’odham and Hopi. This is a place that has special significance— a place where Native Americans pray, collect water and medicinal plants for ceremonies, gather acorns and other foods, and honor those that are buried there. A delegation of Indigenous carvers, campaigners and former tribal-elected leaders will transport a sacred totem pole from the Lummi Nation, WA to Pasadena, CA, where the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will consider the case to protect Oak Flat against the transfer of a 7 square mile stretch of land in Tonto National Forest to a multinational corporation aiming to build one of the world’s largest copper mines.
A public event will be held Wednesday, March 1st from 4-6 pm at the Port of Olympia plaza (west of the Farmer’s Market). Salish Sea tribal members and Interfaith leaders will share ancestral knowledge and prayer and discuss cross-cultural collaboration with a call to action. (Please do not park close to Anthony’s Restaurant.)
