Friday, July 7th from 8 to 10:30 pm at Nicole’s Bar

Come to Nicole’s Bar for an evening of free jazz featuring The Free World and Threshold.

The Free World is led by renown trombonist/vocalist, marc smason, and features vibrant saxist, jeremy shaskus, laura oviedo on violin, vocals, and percussion, olympia veteran pianist, craig hoyer, first-call n.w. bassist, michael barnett and portland’s extra-terrestrial drummer, tim duroche. Together they offer new sounds, free improvisation, and a surprise a minute.

Threshold is a 21st-century string trio with percussion. Says leader Don Berman, “I think of a threshold as an entryway you cross and our music crosses from a fairly standard group of instruments into an unexpected sonic world, where ideas and phrases and sounds blend together an order of their own. Spontaneous surprises occur, the members each utilize their own unique electronic effects, and sometimes it is a listening challenge to determine which instruments are making which sounds!”

At times, a Threshold piece will be brisk and dramatic, then seamlessly morph into what resembles the slow movement in a string quartet, and then develop back into a powerful and dramatic finale. It is different every time. The constant is players listening and paying deep attention to the playing at hand. Threshold features Heather Bentley – Cello, Don Berman—Percussion, and Dennis Rea—Guitar.
