Penrose Physical Therapy: ‘Aging and Myths That Many Believe About Aging’

Aging is often like climbing a mountain. It is a steady slog and it is a battle of the will oftentimes. After working with the 50+ crowd for the last 20 years it is safe to say that most of the time people underestimate what they can do. In fact, I want to tell you a story about Bill. Bill is nearly 80 and he was very skeptical that physical therapy could help. He shared his story on my podcast “Stay Healthy South Sound.”

Bill had physical therapy years ago and thought it was a waste of time and that he could just do the exercises on his own at home. However, this time when his knee was causing lots of limitations his doctor wanted him to try it again so he decided to reach out to us since we were conveniently located to him. He had lost hope that anything could be done for his knee pain and told us that from the start. He discovered that the tips we taught him did indeed decrease his knee pain with getting in and out of a chair and with stairs and with driving. He is so grateful he came and talks about how he had limited himself before, but with the encouragement and explanation by team Penrose he was willing to try things, push his comfort with exercise, and to his surprise – it worked! Who knew that you would have to learn how to get up and down from a chair in a certain way and use certain muscles in the proper way to avoid knee pain? Bill admitted he had believed a myth about aging – that you can’t get stronger or change your current painful situation due to arthritis and/or age.

My book, “Forever Young: You can age gracefully” talks about common myths people believe about aging as well as mistakes people make. I start with this because I hope you don’t give up on improving your condition. Yes, sometimes we do get challenging diagnoses or surgeries that didn’t go according to plan. Even still, we at Penrose PT try to find ways to improve your situation with tips and strategies to help manage that and improve it. I have more stories where we helped someone that thought it was hopeless than not. Several of them are on my podcast “Stay Healthy South Sound.”

If you are struggling with pain I’d encourage you to come to our first ever Open House and Book Signing event at Penrose Physical Therapy on February 29, 2024 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. My book “Forever Young: You can age gracefully” will be 50% off at the event. My entire staff will be around to talk to you and hear your story and answer questions. We will be giving tours of our facility and happy to let you know what services we offer. I will be there signing books and would be happy to give you some encouraging words. We’d love to see you and welcome you. We will have free samples of my organic veggies soup and protein shakes that we use in our “eat for joint health and lower your inflammation” program.

We’d be happy to answer any questions you have about knee pain, back pain, or aging, etc.

Penrose Physical Therapy won #1 physical therapy clinic in Best of South Sound in 2023. We love to provide an exceptional experience with one-on-one care with licensed therapists. Access the podcast here.
