The Evergreen State College will commence its Winter 2021 Art Lecture Series on January 13 at 11:30 a.m. with a presentation from Thea Quiray Tagle, PhD. A writer, scholar, teacher and curator, Tagle’s research investigates socially engaged art and how it moves people to work towards more just and livable futures that are anti-capitalist, feminist and queer.
Now in its 10th year of programming, the Art Lecture Series presents a broad range of interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary art issues by artists, writers, activists and scholars. The presentations are an open opportunity for the college and broader community to explore areas of inquiry and creative production. The platform provides a lively forum for the exchange of ideas between the speakers, students, faculty and the public.
“I am excited about the different perspectives and approaches each speaker brings to what urgently concerns them and how each will engage us differently,” said Shaw Osha, visual arts faculty at Evergreen, and coordinator of the series. “The speakers are artists, scholars and educators and all socially engaged with issues of our times and in the context of history.”
The series will also feature interdisciplinary artist Patte Loper, Evergreen Tacoma faculty member and filmmaker Gilda Sheppard and creative writer and author Simone Nicole Savannah, PhD.
Lectures will take place every other Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. via Zoom, beginning January 13. All events are free and open to the public.
January 13: Thea Quiray Tagle, socially engaged performance
January 27: Patte Loper, interdisciplinary art – sets, environments, installations with feminist and environmental concerns
February 20: Gilda Sheppard, Evergreen Tacoma faculty and filmmaker on incarceration and education
February 24: Simone Nicole Savannah, writer, poet on sexuality, black feminist criticism.
