The holiday shopping season is upon us. For several years my mother has looked forward to receiving her favorite holiday gift from me each year. Like a little kid squeezing for socks, she is sniffing the packages looking for the sweet smell of her annual pound of Holiday Blend from Batdorf & Bronson. I stopped into the tasting room this week to see what else was available for gifting from our local coffee company. We love to buy locally and Batdorf & Bronson has everything for the coffee aficionado to the tea drinker and even the non-coffee drinker.

If you have a true coffee lover on your holiday shopping list they will love the combination of a ceramic hand-held grinder and the pour over system packaged nicely with a pound of coffee. Another to

p choice for the coffee geek is a French press and coffee priced at just under $50.

Tasting room manager Arturo Villalobos begins in the early fall putting together packages for perfect gifting.

Although Arturo is a coffee lover and roaster, he hasn’t forgotten the non-coffee drinkers. Moonstruck Cocoa is another local product in our region originating in Portland, Oregon. The Fireside gift package includes two mugs, Moonstruck hot chocolates, tea and a package of locally produced Chehalis Mints. The gorgeous cardinal and holly mug is a seasonal favorite that sells out every year.

An exciting new offering is this year’s holiday mug. A collaboration between Batdorf and Olympia artist Rick Perry, the solid mug features a unique depiction of Olympia love and after seeing a sneak preview I predict this mug will sell out before the end of the month. Only a small number of mugs have been produced, almost guaranteeing that they will soon be a collector’s item. A holiday mug partnered with a 4oz bag of coffee or a bag of chocolates makes the perfect teacher or hostess gift coming in at under $15.

The clutter-free home is trending this year with dozens of books and websites devoted to removing unnecessary items from our homes to help limit stress and streamline our lives. Consumables such as coffee, tea and chocolates are the perfect answer to green gift giving. I can’t think of anyone on my list that wouldn’t welcome a pound of single source French Roast that is available only for the season. A gorgeous tin is available to fill with your choice of 4-ounce packaged coffee. This is a perfect way to sample several different varieties without committing to a full pound. Chehalis Mints are a delicious gift paired with a mug or cold cup. In addition to the mints, they also produce a special chocolate just for Batdorf & Bronson that contains their Guatemalan coffee. The coffee is ground in the very fine Turkish style and baked into the chocolate giving it just a hint of delicious coffee flavor.

Another special offering is the gift of an experience, which is always a hit during the holidays. Arturo has put together a one-of-a-kind package, which includes the Aeropress coffee system, a mug and a half-pound of coffee. The best part of this package is that each purchase includes an invite to a class taught by Ben Jones, Aeropress National Champion. Jones, who won the brewing contest and competed in Dublin, Ireland. Jones will teach you or your gift recipient how to make a world-class cup of coffee right here in Olympia using the Aeropress. The class will be held on January 7 at the tasting room and if you purchase this holiday gift package, you are guaranteed a spot.

Over at the Batdorf & Bronson Coffeehouse on Capital Way they have all the boxes and tins available to customize your holiday gifts. T-shirts, caps, hot and cold cups can be customized ala Carte for your gifting needs. Choose the items on your own and have them boxed for you at the counter. If you need ideas or some help putting together your ideal gift, the baristas are all trained and happy to offer up some inspiration.

Krista Bentow, Coffeehouse manager suggests a limited edition diner mug. Produced for the 30th anniversary celebration, these mugs are almost gone and have been a customer favorite. A couple of these mugs filled with a coffee sample or a bag of chocolates and you are ready to head to your holiday parties and not arrive empty-handed.

The tasting room has extended its hours, staying open daily from 9:00 – 4:00 p.m. until December 24 so there are no excuses not to get in and buy a few gifts or knock out the whole list. As an added benefit any purchase will score you a free cup of coffee so you have enough energy to finish your wrapping or address those holiday cards.
