Every season has its trademark. Winter is cocoa in front of a fire; spring is when early garden bounty meets leftover Easter candy. But nothing says summer better than classic cars, outdoor BBQ’s, and live music.
On Friday, August 12 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., join the residents and caregivers from Olympia’s Garden Courte Memory Care Community in a celebration of the season. This is the 15th anniversary of their annual Garden Party and classic car show where all are welcome.
A long-time hub of care and support, Garden Courte is so much more than just a residence. They offer caregiver support training, Alzheimer’s and dementia services, and highly skilled respite care. But more than that, they help our region through fundraisers, charity drives, and community-wide events.
One of the most popular annual events is their annual themed Garden Party. This year they’ll be ‘Rockin’ to the Oldies’ and everyone is invited.
Visitors and guests can RSVP by calling 360-491-4435 to Garden Courte’s Culinary Chef Scott to keep an accurate tally. He will be providing BBQ treats like ribs, hamburgers, sausage, hot dogs, fruit, salads, and sides. Don’t forget to save room for strawberry shortcake for dessert.
Walk off your supper by voting for your favorite in the Classic Car show. Winners will be selected in categories like people’s choice, best chick magnet, best picnic car, and best car for a drive-in movie.
Once you’ve placed your vote, dance to the live jazz, pop, and Motown hits of Washington’s own Chris Anderson. The former ‘Singing Busboy of Jebino’s Restaurant’ in Eatonville, Anderson has performed for such notables as the Miss America Organization, the Red Wind, Emerald Queen, Quinault, and Muckleshoot casinos, the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, and for Christine Gregoire, Desmond Tutu, and many more.
Want to warm up to some of Anderson’s takes on classic songs? Get your groove on to Mack the Knife, I Got Rhythm, Fever, and Underneath the Moon on his interactive website. Though only in his 20’s, his range and soulful interpretations are sure to get your toes tapping.
Though the event is free, Garden Courte will gladly accept donations at the Garden Party. These funds will benefit the advocacy, outreach, and continuing mission of the South Sound Alzheimer’s Council. Dawn Peterson, Garden Courte’s Director of Sales and Marketing and the wise voice behind the ‘Ask Dawn’ blog, is a member of the Council, as are more than a dozen other volunteers from across the caregiving spectrum.
Garden Courte is located at 626 Lilly Road NE in Olympia. Follow their adventures on Facebook or schedule a tour of the facility. You can also track their current outreach, clothing drive, or fundraiser—as well as staff profiles, resident news, and tasty recipes—on their website.
Journalist Peter York once called rock and roll “the hamburger that ate the world.” Come join family, friends, and neighbors in a celebration of music, food, fun…all while doing your part to care for our loved ones and community. Get that hamburger before it gets you.
