ThurstonTalk’s Favorite Features From This Week – 7/15/12

On a weekly basis, I make the comment “one of the best parts of ThurstonTalk is interacting with cool people whose paths may not have otherwise crossed with mine.”  This week was no different.  In fact, I think I said that at least three times.  And, that’s what I want to highlight for you this week.  Not only does ThurstonTalk consistently write positive stories about people, businesses, and organizations doing good things in Thurston County but we also bring stories to you that you may not have otherwise known about.

Check out the variety in this week’s Editor’s Picks to see what I mean.  And, if you have an extra minute, flip through the pictures from Wednesday’s Music In the Park – a free outdoor concert series in downtown Olympia.

Olympia Native Brodie Buckland Prepares For Summer Olympics

Wow!  This article is an impressive summary of Capital High School graduate, Brodie Buckland’s quest for gold at the Summer Olympics.  Buckland’s route to the games initially started at Olympia Area Rowing.  About a month ago, we posted another story about OAR’s junior pair that placed at a national competition.  What a fine example of people reaching their goals.  I’m so excited that ThurstonTalk was able to bring this article to you, under the masterful reporting of Tom Rohrer.  Nice work!

Yoga Makes A Die-Hard Runner ‘Just Feel Happy’

If you have read any of Anne Larsen’s previous articles, you will instantly tie the title (die-hard) with her name.  (Want to read more of her articles?  Just type her name into the search engine in the upper right corner of our site.)  So, when she tries a new yoga class, it’s clearly shocking to her that she finds it so challenging.  Anne, also a consummate music fan, is now adding play lists, appropriate for the exercise she’s reporting on, to her articles.  Cool stuff!

Fast Boats And Blue Skies At Black Lake Hydro Regatta

This article is a perfect example of how our ThurstonTalk writers are out in the community, digging up story ideas.  Tom Rohrer, our sports writer, attended the hydro races and drafted an educational piece about the experience.  Who knew Black Lake was the host for the Western Divisional Hydro Regatta?  But, because ThurstonTalk writers live, work, and play here, they are able to attend and report on awesome things happening in our community.

If you have a story idea, drop us a note at submit@thurstontalk.com.  Feel free to suggest that we write about something important to you.  Or, maybe there is something going on that you are wondering about and want more information before you attend.  Tell us about what makes our Thurston County community so great!
