At the Schmidt House we present a preview of a long-term local history project dealing with the history of Tumwater businesses since 1845. Public History Manager, Don Trosper, will give an illustrated overview covering Tumwater’s businesses from the days of water-driven industry on the Deschutes, the transition to hydroelectric power, the arrival of the Schmidt family and the brewery, to the changes brought about by the automobile, and the modern era kicked off by the building of the freeway and the growth that came from that.

Don says that this talk provides a thumbnail sketch of the many businesses, large and small that gave life to this historic town. “Although the brewery was the largest employer of the area and gave Tumwater a national identity,” he states, “it certainly wasn’t the only business in this oldest American community in the state. This project covers a multitude of business owners and workers over the years, each having an impact on the history of our community.”  Trosper will make a request for input from community members about their memories and whatever photos and stories they may have on the topic.

These talks are free, although donations are gratefully accepted to keep this series going strong.
