On Olympia’s west side, Hays Ave NW experiences extraordinary and deleterious surface flows during rainfall. What few storm drains there are outfall into the woods. Both the street side and woods experience damaging erosion. Storm drains that do not end in the woods go directly to Puget Sound, where chemicals in runoff are lethal to fish (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNruLbD2sP8).
Rain gardens work like a native forest by capturing and infiltrating polluted runoff. Help us reduce water pollution and prevent flooding in the Puget Sound by joining Olympia Coalition for Ecosystems Preservation install a 2000 sq. ft. rain garden at the end of Hays Ave NW.
We will be clearing English Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry from the area so that we can plan for the rain garden. Come and hear how we intend to install a rain garden at each and every roadway dead end into the West Bay Woods and Schneider Creek.
