New Dry Needling Treatment at Penrose Physical Therapy Brings Immediate Relief for Local Patient

Dry needling is a new service being offered in Washington. Penrose staff received training in this treatment modality that uses needles to treat musculoskeletal pain. While it is like acupuncture, acupuncture is based in traditional Chinse medicine approach that inserts needles at meridian line points on the body. In contrast, dry needling targets trigger points within muscles, based on Western anatomical knowledge.

Oliver was not familiar with dry needling before seeking physical therapy following her fall down the stairs that significantly fractured her big toe and ripped its tendon completely off. She had also developed plantar fasciitis, which is heel pain from inflammation of a band of tissue that runs across the bottom of each foot connecting the heel bone to the toes.

When Penrose staff described dry needling to Oliver as potential treatment, she was enthusiastic. “I jumped right in,” she says. And she saw immediate improvement. “It was instant gratification,” she describes. She adds that she also saw improvement in her hip that had been injured several years ago.

Dry Needling is One of Many Treatment Options at Penrose & Associates Physical Therapy

Oliver received dry needling on her foot and calf, in addition to completing a Penrose-designed daily physical therapy routine. She says that the process of inserting the needles into specific muscle points does not hurt much. “It is a little pinch,” she says. “It is very tolerable.” She says a friend also had dry needle treatment following hip replacements and loved it. And the potential rewards are significant.

“I would recommend them,” Oliver says of the Penrose staff who provided her dry needling and physical therapy in several sessions. “Fantastic. Each one has their own strength.”
