Spring is just around the corner, or rather we keep hoping it is, and if you’re anything like me, you are probably starting to think about bringing your yard back to life. In some cases, this task can be too much to handle on your own. That’s where Gold Standard Landscaping and Lawn Services can help. “What you often see is after the winter everyone is in a hustle to clean up, get moss out and mow,” says new owner Nathan Petty Jr. “It just becomes this frenzy for people to get their outdoor spaces ready to entertain and enjoy.”

Meeting Nathan at his day job, you probably wouldn’t guess he owns a landscaping and lawn care company. As a full-time state worker and part-time college professor, Nathan has plenty to keep him busy. However, he recently decided take a leap and invest in his newest dream, Gold Standard Landscaping & Lawn Services. “I’m new to this particular industry as an owner, but I’ll tell you what, I’ve been on my hands and knees with a shovel and a mower since I was eight years old,” he says laughing. “I’m not new to cultivating the soil. I don’t have a problem taking off this tie and getting my hands dirty.” Even though he can’t always be on the job site, Nathan enjoys getting his fair share of time out with team when he can.
Running Gold Standard may be new to Nathan, but he has always envisioned himself in some capacity working with plants and nature. He’s seen firsthand the effect a new landscape can have on people and the joy that fresh flowers and bright green grass can bring. When the opportunity presented itself, Nathan had to jump on it. “I think this is the next part of my life,” he continues. “I’m not waiting for my state career to end and walk off with a retirement watch to start something. I want to be sure I have other opportunities to be participating in. I saw this company as a gift and a way I can give back and do something people will really get a lot of enjoyment out of.”
Gold Standard Landscaping and Lawn Services has been a local lawn care company for the last ten years. With Nathan now at the helm, he sees bigger things for the future. “I’m awake from sun up to sun down actively thinking about ways I can grow this program,” he says. “Every waking hour I’m thinking about how I can maximize my community involvement and what I can do to contribute. Because we have best in class professionals on my team, we are maximizing our deep skill sets and moving toward adding landscape design and care to what we already offer and aim to become a Green Certified company.”

Landscape design is a passion of Nathan’s that he hopes to cultivate with this new endeavor. And as a business professional, Nathan knows how important it is to create these beautiful and relaxing spaces to clear your mind. “We’re trying to be very deliberate about our growth and how we want to be involved in our community” he explains. “For me it’s more about having a holistic approach and designing these outdoor living spaces and access ways in nature we all know and love.” Nathan believes that simply taking a few minutes during the work day to step outside can reenergize your body and help you get fresh mindset to continue on.
Because of his varied background, Nathan says he brings something new to the industry and believes it will set his business apart from others. “I’m trying to take this to a point where when people see the name on a truck that says Gold Standard, that doesn’t just mean mow, blow and go,” he explains. “They see a company that’s out here trying to raise the overall level of our community.” Quality is much more important to him than quantity and he says he is determined to maintain a high level of professionalism. “This is truly about providing a service in the industry where people actually want to get something they can rely on,” he adds. “Being on time and defect free based upon the customer’s requirements is what really matters to us.” Gold Standard will even turn down a job if it doesn’t align with their values. He tells me they are not about cutting corners or compromising anyone’s safety.

Nathan emphasized that his goal is to leave a job knowing they did their absolute best and be able to see the satisfaction and happiness on their customers’ faces. “I tell my team, just keep smiling,” he says. “We are doing a very good thing by giving back to the earth, which we believe is a super important part of this job. We all have the same twenty-four hours in a day. What separates us is how we actually use that time. For me, I try to maximize my legacy in regards to what I can do to contribute to my community.”
