With temperatures hovering right below freezing, around 30 brave men, women, boys and girls entered the pristine, yet chilling, waters of Offut Lake near Tenino. It was the fifth consecutive New Years Day that Offut Lake Resort was the site for the Polar Bear Plunge. A fire to nurse the swimmers back to warmth was provided, as were warm beverages and a heated changing room. Offut Lake kayakers paddled over to the jumping area for their own amusement, and looked on with joy, not envy, as the individuals and groups entered the water.
