From visits to local businesses, to discussions with elected officials, to tours of social service providers, Leadership Thurston County participants are making connections throughout the community during monthly challenge days.
During the first half of the program year, the group explored business and economic development, government, law and justice, and health and human services issues. Between now and graduation on June 8, the class will look at the topics of education, arts and culture and the environment.
“Aha” moments are common during the sessions. After a tour of the juvenile detention center, one person commented, “I sat in a cell and tried to imagine myself as a student in that environment.” After visiting Capitol City Press and Harbor Wholesale, another noted, “I was struck by both companies’ ability to grow during tough times due to their commitment to innovation.”
Community leaders provide consistent, sagely advice like – “think creatively,” “work collaboratively,” “follow your passion” and “get involved.”
