Visitors who tour the Washington State Executive Mansion during Women’s History Month in March will have the option of choosing a special “Women in the Mansion” tour of the house.

“Women in the Mansion” tours will be offered on March 15 and 22 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The tours are free to the public, but space is limited and reservations are required. Standard tours of the Governor’s Mansion, with an emphasis on its general history and furnishings, are also available March 1 (no tours on March 8), and on most Wednesday afternoons throughout the year. Reservations for all tours of the Governor’s Mansion can be made through State Capitol Visitor Services at (360) 902-8880 or tours.@des.wa.gov.

The Mansion Tour Program’s volunteer docents will present stories of Washington women who have influenced the history of the State from inside the Governor’s Mansion. The tour will proceed, from the initial first Lady of the Mansion, Lizzie Muir Hay (1909-1912) to many of Washington’s first ladies as well as the women who have served as governor. We will also be telling how suffragists lobbied for women’s voting rights during the official Mansion ‘housewarming’ in 1909.

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. The United States has observed it annually throughout the month of March since 1987.
