Capital Playhouse’s Kids at Play presents Tommy July 11-14, 2013 and July 18-21, 2013
Winner of 5 Tony awards (Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design, and Best Lighting Design 1993) and 3 Olivier Awards (Best Musical Revival, Best Director, and Best Lighting Design 1997)
The Tony and Olivier award winning rock opera TOMMY, with music and lyrics by Pete Townshend and book by Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff, explores the troubled life of the deaf, dumb, and blind pinball wizard, Tommy.
Based on the English rock band “The Who’s” revolutionary 1969 concept album and the film of the same name, TOMMY is the story of a troubled young deaf, dumb, and blind man who, when he is discovered to have exceptional skills at the pinball machine, begins a messianic rise to superstardom. Set in post-war London, and considered by many to be the original rock opera, TOMMY is a high energy, one-of-a-kind, exhilarating show. If you like shows like JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and AMERICAN IDIOT, you’ll love THE WHO’S TOMMY! Audiences will be sure to leave the show humming (or head banging to) songs like “Eyesight To The Blind”, “See Me, Feel Me”, and of course “Pinball Wizard”!
“TOMMY, the stunning new stage adaptation of the 1969 rock opera by The Who is at long last the authentic rock musical that has eluded Broadway for two generations. Written in the apocalyptic year of 1969, the show is so fresh and emotionally raw that newcomers to it will think that it was born yesterday” – Frank Rich, New York Times
Directed by Matthew Flores ~ Music Direction by Miles Forte ~ Choreography by Nick Main
