Native Americans serve in the military at far greater rates than others. Phil Red Eagle will talk about Veterans’ experience in war and healing via sweat lodges, AA and more. He’ll also speak to the effect that a generation of Canoe Journeys has had on cultural renewal, and why it’s important to have Non-Natives experience the journeys as well as Natives.
Philip H. Red Eagle is a writer, artist, metal smith and carver living in Tacoma and is of Steilacoom-S’Klallam and Dakota descent. He is one of the founders of Tribal Canoe Journeys and maker of over 7500 rings for the Copper Rings Ceremony. Philip is the author of Red Earth: A Vietnam Warrior’s Journey. He is currently working as the Cultural Knowledge in Residence coordinator, guiding carving at the UW. For more of Philip’s story please see page 4 of our newsletter supplement here, where we have included information from the forward of his book.
He will join us for a meal following his presentation and conversation. Bring a dish for the potluck, if you can make it in-person.
