Mark Kremen (Skokomish) will share his experience living through the forces of assimilation during his childhood living in non-native white homes and the challenges as a young man to find his path to reclaim his native heritage: learning his Salish language and reclaiming the cultural background of his Tribe.

Mark was a puller (paddler) of a canoe during the 1989 Paddle to Seattle, a cornerstone event in the restoration of Canoe Family Journeys among the Tribes of the Salish Sea. His life has included remarkable experiences in various settings with other Native Peoples across the US and in other countries – Ecuador, for example. He has for years been involved with the Lutheran Church’s relationship with Native Americans.

He will walk us through his life then open a conversation with us about the importance of each person’s relationship with the natural world.

We ask everyone to bring some healthy food for the potluck meal that follows his presentation. It is customary to make a modest contribution to the basket for his honorarium.
