Celebrated composer Maria Newman will grace Harlequin’s stage to provide live accompaniment for a recent re-mastering of Mary Pickford’s 1919 film classic, Heart o’ the Hills. She will be performing her original score, along with the Malibu Coast Silent Film Orchestra, which includes a string quartet, flute, harp and percussion.

Mary Pickford’s Heart o’ the Hills is a rollicking romp featuring a clan of Kentucky hillbillies with their own brand of entertainment and a refreshing sense of justice. Pickford plays Mavis Hawn, a wild tomboy who, when we meet her, is practicing trick shooting so that she will be able to kill the person who murdered her father. Although technically a “revenge” film, The Heart o’ the Hills is a lighthearted feel-good movie, with astonishing scenery and wonderful acting from the entire cast, which includes a 22-year-old John Gilbert!
Newman was educated at the prestigious Eastman School of Music and Yale University, and graduated both institutions with high honors. Maria Newman is well-known as a composer of concert music, and has also worked closely with the Mary Pickford Foundation, having written 19 original scores for them so far. Please join us for an unforgettable evening of not-so-silent film with special guest Maria Newman and the Malibu Coast Silent Film Orchestra.
