Hussein abu Hussein, the lead attorney for the family of Rachel Corrie in their civil lawsuit against the state of Israel, will speak in Olympia on Wednesday, November 18th. The presentation will discuss the current situation in Israel/Palestine, institutionalized discrimination against Palestinian citizens of Israel, and outcomes of the Corrie’s civil lawsuit in Israeli courts. He will be joined by Cindy and Craig Corrie, parents of human rights activist and observer Rachel Corrie. The event will take place at the Olympia Center (222 Columbia St. NW) at 6:30 PM in Room 101/102.
Since 1976, Hussein abu Hussein has worked on human rights issues impacting Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and in Israel, including land confiscation, discrimination, and political imprisonment. He is a cofounder of the Arab Association for Human Rights, has served as Chairman of the Board of Ittijah: The Union of Arab Community-Based Associations, and is current Chairmen of Adalah – the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. With Fiona McKay, he authored the book Access Denied: Palestinian Access to Land in Israel. Since 2005, he has represented the Corrie family in actions against the State of Israel for the killing of Rachel Corrie.
On March 16, 2003, Rachel Corrie was killed by an Israeli military, Caterpillar D9R bulldozer in the Gaza Strip as she tried to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home. Through efforts with the U.S. Congress, U.S. Departments of State and Justice, the Israeli Government, and in Israeli and U.S. courts, the Corrie family has for over twelve years sought accountability and to promote changes in U.S. foreign policy in Israel/Palestine. This event is sponsored by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice.
