The League of Women voters of Thurston County will hold an educational meeting on the 2020 census and redistricting. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The 2020 Census will take place this year, and will be the first U.S. census to offer options to respond on line, by phone, or by writing. Among other things, the census will determine the number of seats for the U.S. House of representatives and the number of delegates for the Electoral College. In 2021, the State of Washington Redistricting Commission will use the census results to begin the process of “redistricting,” determining the number and geographical locations of congressional and state legislative districts. The League of Women Voters played a major role in the formation of Washington’s bipartisan Redistricting Commission.

Lisa McLean, 2020 Census Coordinator with the State Office of Financial Management, will provide an overview of census efforts in Washington State. Sherry Sullivan, CIELO and the Hispanic Roundtable board member, and Lin Crowley co-chair of the South Puget Sound chapter of the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition, will speak to local efforts to obtain a complete census count. Alison McCaffree, executive director of “Politics of the Possible in Action” will discuss redistricting and how it works in Washington. Dean Foster, retired member of the state Redistricting Commission will also be present to provide information on the redistricting process.
