The 11th annual Latino Youth Summit returns to South Puget Sound Community College with a very special guest. Renowned author Luis Urrea, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame, will be the keynote speaker at the Summit, which takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the college.
The theme for this year’s Latino Youth Summit is “The Power of the Word/El Poder de la Palabra,” to highlight the importance of personal voice and community. Urrea was born in Tijuana, Mexico to a Mexican father and an American mother. His writings include nonfiction and fiction, telling stories which are a tribute to the tenacity of a people who have learned to survive against the most impossible odds, and return to them a sense of pride and identity. Urrea will help inspire the summit’s attendees to find their own voices. Urrea will present to the community that evening as part of the college’s Artist and Lecture Series.
The Latino Youth Summit is organized by volunteers of the Hispanic Roundtable of the South Sound (www.hispanicroundtable.org) and is attended by Latino high school students from Mason, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Pacific and Lewis counties. Students are introduced to resources for education, healthy living, careers and culture in this one-day conference serving more than 500 Latino high school students.
