The Master Gardener’s Foundation of Olympia is hosting a series of classes for Children at their Dirt Works Demonstration Garden.  All events are free, but do require pre-registration.

Register in advance by the Friday before the program you plan to attend. Please e-mail children-garden@mgftc.org and provide your name, contact information and age(s) of children planning to attend.

 

July 9th 10am – noon –   Ladybugs: Superheroes of the Garden
This class will focus on the great benefits of lady beetles in our garden and the life cycle stages of these valuable insects. Children will learn to identify lady beetle larva and how they are hungry predators that eat “bad bugs”.

July 16th 10am – noon – Art in the Garden

Art in the Garden –  A creative painting  day to beautify our gardens.  We will be in the garden painting signs and creating art to display in the demonstration garden and for children to take home.  Dress to paint!
July 23rd 10am – noon – Slug University

Slug University – The world of slugs is a fascinating one and in this class the children will learn about the valuable role of slugs in our forest.  An assortment of activities will familiarize children with amazing slug facts regarding these creatures.
July 30 – 10am – noon – The Lovely World of Leaves

The Lovely World of Leaves –Leaves are pivotal to plant growth and this class will explore the processes that occur in leaves as well as identifying different kinds of leaves in the garden around us.
August 6 – 10am – noon – Bird Olympics and Bird Buffet

Bird Olympics and Bird Buffet – Our gardens are places that birds will come to for dinner as they eat many of the pests that are harmful to plants and this class will explore the incredible dynamic between birds and our gardens.

August 13 – 10am – noon – Wonderful World of Worm Composting

Wonderful World of Worm Composting –  Vermicomposting and our Worm Bins are the focus of this session as children learn about red wiggler worms and the incredible compost they help to make which provides amazing benefits for our garden.

August 20 – 10am – noon – Healthy Harvesting: Gardening & Nutrition

Healthy Harvesting: Gardening & Nutrition – The health benefits of home grown veggies is the focus of this session as children learn how what we grow makes them stronger and healthier. We will be exploring the vitamins that are found in things we  grow at the Children’s Garden.

August 27 – 10am – noon – Garden Game Day

Garden Game Day – Gardening and games go hand in hand in this session as children play garden games that provide valuable teaching points about gardening.
