Olympia lovers of visual arts and horticulture are invited to sample the ancient art and craft of bonsai, “a tree in a pot”.
Artists, practitioners, and enthusiasts from all over the Northwest will gather in Olympia for the Pacific Northwest Bonsai Clubs Association convention, hosted by the Puget Sound Bonsai Association.
The public is welcome to visit the convention’s tree exhibit and vendor marketplace free of charge throughout the weekend.
Bonsai artists create the illusion of a centuries-old tree in a pot only 3 to 4 inches deep. Contrary to popular belief, bonsai trees are not genetically engineered; these miniature versions of mature, full-size trees are created through standard horticultural techniques such as pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting.
Each bonsai tree on exhibit is enhanced by its pot, the display stand, and a separate viewing stone or companion plant, evoking season and location. Every tree tells a story.
