Hip-hop in the Northwest has been shaped by local history. Because of this, the movement can be seen as living testimony to our region’s social and political movements. This is the premise of Daudi Abe’s soon-to-be published book, “Emerald Street: A History of Hip-Hop in Seattle.”

Abe’s talk will examine the sweeping influence of local hip hop culture: Grammy-winning rappers, a world champion break dance crew, an internationally read hip-hop magazine, world-famous clothing designers and local producers who collaborated with some of the biggest names in music. He recognizes the movement’s influence on grassroots organizations dedicated to community service and education.
