None of us likes uninvited guests in our home or place of business, especially the kind with multiple sets of legs. Venables Pest Management, owned and run by the Venables family, has been keeping homes and businesses pest-free since 2001 in Thurston, Mason, Lewis and Pierce counties. Now, they are returning to a place they love, offering Bellingham pest control and Ferndale pest control with the same customer-focused and results-driven philosophy that has earned them an incredible reputation.

“Bellingham feels like home,” shares Steve Venables and his daughter, Juliana Venables, about why they are so excited to be expanding north.

Family-Owned Venables Pest Management Has Deep Roots in Bellingham

Venables is truly family-run. Steve is the founder and Juliana is the CEO. Together, Steve, Marsha, his wife, and Juliana are all owners. They are all very involved in day-to-day operations and ensure their team members and customers are treated with respect and integrity.

Marsha and Steve lived in Bellingham while Steve attended Western Washington University. After trying Eastern Washington University and University of Washington, Western Washington,  and the Bellingham area,  just felt like home to them. “WWU just felt like a better fit,” shares Steve. “We also really liked the feel of Bellingham. It’s very similar to Olympia. In fact, if we didn’t have as deep of roots as we have in Olympia, we would probably have moved back.”

In 1982, Steve received a bachelor’s degree in Community Health Education with a minor in Business Administration. “Back then, no one knew what that was so it was difficult to find jobs in that field,” he shares. “It became highly beneficial, though, when starting my own pest control company in 1989.”

Juliana, who was born in Bellingham, returned to attend Western Washington University like her father. “It just fit for me,” she says. “The size and distance from Olympia were just right. Not too big, not too small and not too far, but just far enough away.” In 2004, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with a focus in entrepreneurial studies and marketing.

Like her parents, Juliana loved her four years in Bellingham. “I love the sense of community, the scenery, the parks, the restaurants and Fairhaven,” she says. “You can’t beat ice cream from Mallards or watching a sunset from Boulevard Park, either.”

Where to Find Bellingham Pest Control From a Dedicated, Local Team

Venables Pest Management is now offering pest control in Bellingham and Ferndale because it made sense for a dedicated team member, not just to grow for the sake of growing.  “We are not expanding because we are driven for significant growth,” shares Steve. “Many companies are, but our philosophy in doing business lies in providing a high-quality service, in a conscientious way to our customers and providing a workplace with a wonderful company culture to our team members. And as a result of that, we’ve expanded significantly, especially over these last few years.”

Marranda Gonzalez is the newly-appointed Bellingham Lead Technician. She has worked for Venables for the past two years in Thurston County, but fell in love with the Bellingham area during frequent trips there. “I’ve been making weekend trips up here for over a year to visit my partner, and somewhere along the way I completely fell in love with the idea of making it my next home,” she says. She loves the opportunities for adventure the area provides, including the many parks.

“At its heart, the city is home to an inclusive and welcoming community,” she adds. “I knew I wanted to move, but I wasn’t really ready to leave my role at Venables behind.”

A company that puts its team members first, the Venables family found Marranda’s dilemma to be an opportunity, rather than a problem. “As we wanted to expand our footprint and with Marranda’s desire to relocate there, the stars aligned,” shares Steve.

“We’ve been considering expanding to a new service territory, so after giving it some serious thought, we asked Marranda if this would be something she’d like to take on and now here we are!” adds Juliana.

“I feel incredibly grateful that I didn’t have to leave and now get to bring the Venable’s name to a place that is special to all of us,” shares Marranda.

Marranda will establish a full route of pest control in Bellingham and Ferndale and then, as the team grows, she will lead it. “Currently she’s been wearing many hats, from community outreach and sales to service technician,” says Juliana. “She’s also been helping us with some administrative overflow work out of the Olympia branch during this busy season.”

Services for Bellingham pest control will be the same as their current offerings, with the exception of overwintering bugs like stink bugs, boxelder bugs and western conifer seed bugs. For these, the team will assess the need in the area and adjust service offerings accordingly in the coming year.
