On Friday, September 26, 2025, over 500 volunteers will don their LIVE UNITED t-shirts and fan out across Thurston County to give back in a big way: pulling weeds, painting buildings, cleaning sidewalks, and more. United Way of Thurston County’s annual Day of Caring is more than just a volunteer event, it’s a celebration of community spirit, teamwork, and making a tangible difference.
Day of Caring was established in 1992 as Thurston County’s single largest day of volunteerism. The goal: to increase awareness of local human service organizations and demonstrate how people working together for the common good can accomplish great things.
“United Way of Thurston County mobilizes the caring power of our community to improve the health, education, and financial stability of every person in Thurston County and we take that fight to many fronts,” said Chris Wells, executive director of United Way of Thurston County. “Day of Caring provides an opportunity for our workplace partners, corporate supporters, individual donors, and community members to turn their passion into action. Together, we’ll tackle dozens of projects for local nonprofits and bring the people power to get them done.”
Volunteer teams from long-standing partners like Olympia Federal Savings and Puget Sound Energy will roll up their sleeves to support nonprofits, including the Family Support Center of South Sound and the Thurston County Food Bank, among others.
This year’s Day of Caring will feature more than 20 service projects throughout the county, ranging from painting and landscaping the homes of low-income and disabled residents to harvesting food bank gardens and removing invasive plants from public spaces.
