The Capital High School boys baseball team hosted cross town rival Olympia on Saturday, April 26 2025, at Waits Field in Olympia that saw Olympia steal the win 5-4. Olympia trailed 0-4 heading into the sixth inning but scored two in the 6th and three in the 7th to win the game.

The game was a non-league meet up, but had value more for the teams preparation for May State tournaments and bragging rights between two teams that share a school district and have friendships between the teams. Olympia plays in 4A SPSL (South Puget Sound League) and Capital is in the 3A PSL (Puget Sound League). The friendly community event moved to a heated ending when Olympia first baseman Lincoln Berg collided with Capitals Cooper Huff during the bottom of the 5th.

The collision sparked a fire within the Olympia squad. The Bears scored five runs in the last two innings and saw Berg enter as the pitcher in the bottom of the seventh where he struck out the side to end the game.

Olympia (13-6) head coach Derick Weldon enjoyed the opportunity for his team to play Capital. “The kids grow up playing each other in youth baseball and all know each other and it’s the right thing to do for the programs to play and it’s great to get a non-league game later in the year,” Weldon remarked. “This is when we need to start playing our best baseball. We are trying to put things together moving into the playoffs and I’m proud of my team and the five seniors and how they lead from the front and it’s a good mix of veterans and some younger guys.”

Capital (15-4) looks to rebound and finish strong in the PSL where they currently lead in the “Nisqually” Division and hope to meet Gig Harbor (leaders in the Narrows Division)  for the PSL League Championship. Head coach Brian Shannon always enjoys the atmosphere and challenge playing in a cross town rivalry game. “We always look forward to the game with Olympia and it’s great for the kids that grew up playing against or with each other,” Shannon stated. “We are trying to finish the season strong and hope to make the league championship. My team has a great group of kids with consistent play and they are ready to compete.
