For her adult life, Essie Hicks has been helping people be more comfortable in their own bodies through her business DreamSpace Therapeutics in Yelm. Essie is a licensed massage therapist, and yet that is only the tip of her iceberg. Over the years she has earned certifications in numerous healing modalities, treated many with serious neck and back issues, returned to school for an undergraduate in social science and master’s degree in public administration, and raised a family with two sons still at home. In her 30-plus years of practice, Essie is grateful to be back in Yelm where she started in 1999.
Treatments for Severe Neck & Back Issues In Yelm
“I’m helping people whom I love,” says Essie. Years ago, her mom married a man who was a cowboy and bull rider with severe back and neck injuries. She treated him. Yelm still has its share of professional rodeo athletes. “I am comfortable with people who have had car accidents,” she adds. “I have a lot of people with headaches.” This includes those with notable neck restrictions and those experiencing PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Essie’s clients include vets with military injuries and people with geriatric issues.
Her education has included studying under master bodyworkers and herbologists. Essie has studied energy work and traditional deep Swedish massage. Her certifications include craniosacral therapy, lymphatic drainage, pregnancy massage, sports massage, hydrotherapy, Zen Triggerpoint Anatomy, ZenBodytherapy and Aromapoint Therapy. The training in all these areas means that she has numerous options and skill sets to work with each individual for that’s person’s specific, desired results. She believes a single session can bring pain relief and freer movement. Additionally, Essie is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association and the International Association of Structural Integrators.
An incredible value of body work is that it is drug-free as well as offers great degrees of healing. For people dealing with injuries, moving forward with greater ease and mobility is a gift. Bodywork can also be part of your health and well-being care. Stress, aging and the bumps and bruises of normal living are mitigated with regular massage. Therapeutic massage can work harmoniously with western medicine and other modes of healing.
Yelm Bodyworker Continues Education for Clients’ Benefit
Essie is a life-learner. She is currently training in advanced techniques for lymph drainage, a lengthy yoga teaching certification, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and forest therapy. “This type of body work is not so hard on my body,” says Essie who likens the work to a dance and finding harmony within and without. She believes this will allow her to practice as long as she wants.
She still has two of her five sons at home, a husband, grandchildren, pets and numerous hobbies. Her office in Yelm is open during the week for appointments. Her weekends are for teaching and family. She enjoys time outdoors. The San Juan basalt stones she uses for treatment were found during an outing. They brought to mind her learning about igneous rocks in a college geology class.

Essie has been teaching massage since 2000. As a nationally certified instructor, she provides continuing education in injury treatment therapies and prenatal massage at Bodymechanics School of Myotherapy & Massage and the Port Townsend School of Massage. She also provides consulting services to small massage practices and various spas.
“We have a crisis of maternal mortality in the U.S.,” shares Essie. “Massage therapists have a role to play.” Massage can decrease pain, create a shorter labor, and generally provide more relaxation during the birth process. It can also add to successful bonding with the child. It is just one of the reasons she loves teaching.
Yelm Center for Well-Being Businesses
“I love working with people who compliment my business.” One neighbor is Mark Bingle, a Doctor of Chiropractic within Northwest Advanced Spinal Care. “He spends time with his patients,” notes Essie. Dr. Michael Carruth of Blue Water Acupuncture Center is both an MD and a licensed acupuncturist and East Asian Medical Practitioner. Also, within the complex is Rejuvenescence Med Spa, which offers numerous treatments including Botox for headaches. Wes Williams, who is a massage therapist, is one of the other neighbors.
Essie hopes for a nutritionist to join the space. The proximity of these businesses makes creating a wellness team easy.
