A Foundation of Support

Martinez grew up in a hardworking family of Mexican immigrants, whose values of determination and education shaped her aspirations. “They worked selflessly to give their children a brighter future,” states Martinez. “Unlike my parents, I was born into a life of endless opportunities—opportunities that are earned.”

As a high school student in Yelm, she was granted a scholarship from the Olympia Tumwater Foundation in 2017. This award was a pivotal stepping stone in her journey to becoming an engineer.

While pursuing her degree at Saint Martin’s University, Martinez not only benefited financially from the Foundation’s support but also gained invaluable mentorship. During her summers, she interned with the Foundation, engaging in projects that provided her with real-world experience. During this time, she formed meaningful connections with Foundation board members, one of whom offered career counseling that helped her focus her path in engineering.

From Intern to Engineer

With a passion for problem-solving and a strong academic foundation, Martinez went on to join SCJ Alliance, a prominent engineering and planning firm based in the Pacific Northwest. Her work focuses on creating innovative solutions that enhance communities—a natural extension of her values and upbringing.

“Being an engineer is about more than just designing structures; it’s about creating spaces where people can thrive,” says Martinez. “That vision aligns with the mission of the Olympia Tumwater Foundation, and it’s why I’ve always felt so connected to their work.”

Giving Back as a Board Member

In 2024, Martinez was selected to join the board of the Olympia Tumwater Foundation, bringing her unique perspective as a former scholarship recipient and intern. Her journey from recipient to leader reflects the Foundation’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering lifelong relationships.

“I know firsthand the impact this Foundation can have, not just financially, but in terms of mentorship and opportunity,” Martinez shares. “It’s an honor to be in a position to give back and help guide the Foundation’s work in supporting future generations.”

A Legacy of Empowerment

Her journey from a high school student in Yelm to a respected engineer and Foundation board member is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when individuals and organizations invest in people. The Olympia Tumwater Foundation, through its scholarships and programs, continues to play a vital role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow—leaders like Rikki Martinez, who are committed to making a difference.
