The City of Lacey maintains their Lacey Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan) as a way to manage both the built and natural environment. The Comp Plan’s goal is to offer guidance for the next 20 years and covers such topics as community growth and expansion, housing, parks, economic development, transportation, public services, and much more.
Updating the Lacey Comprehensive Plan to Build a Strong Future
The City is required to update the Comp Plan every 10 years, with the next update due in 2025. Hans Shepherd, City of Lacey Senior Planner in the Community and Economic Development Department, says the Plan acts as a blueprint for development in the city. Although the state has laws and policies to direct growth, “the community determines how that growth will be accommodated, what it will look like, and how potential impacts can be avoided or mitigated,” says Shepherd.
As a guiding document, Shepherd says the Comp Plan’s target audience is truly anyone with a connection to Lacey. This includes residents, businesses, educational providers, patrons, and community partners.
Welcoming Community Input to Help Guide and Grow a Thriving City
The City welcomes all community members to provide input through a Comprehensive Plan Survey. The survey includes open-ended questions about the future of the city. Topics include ways to improve quality of life; where respondents live, work and play; where residents would like to see additional job growth; transportation usage or travel barriers; and climate change.
Your input is especially important, says Shepherd, because “current projections show us growing by around 1,000 people per year for the next 20 years. While Lacey has been a growing community, this means additional space for housing, new job markets, areas for recreation, and city-provided services.”
