Tumwater High School swept rival A.G.West Black Hills Thursday, September 14, 2023 in 2A EVCO (Evergreen Conference) girls volleyball, three games to none in early league action. Black Hills visited Tumwater High and challenged in the first set but was not able to overcome consistent play from Tumwater falling 25-22. The T-Birds easily handled the second set winning 26-14 led by strong play from “libero” Brooklynn Hayes and fellow seniors Emily Robello and Whitney Van Gorkom. The final set saw Tumwater outlast a few rallies from the Lady Wolves as the T-Birds swept the match with a 25-18 third set win.
Head coach for Tumwater, Molly Cichosz, was pleased with her team’s play. “It felt good as last year Black Hills beat us to go to State, so coming out strong and beating them in three felt great,” Cichosz stated after the win. “Moving forward there are a few things we did well and we want to continue doing those basics and now keep building and exaggerating those skills. That will raise our level. Overall, it was a good night and the turnout by the crowd was fun and I’ve not seen a crowd that big for a while here so it was great to have that support.”
First year Wolves coach, Karlee Sampson, was frustrated with many aspects of the match. “It was a tough match and I was disappointed with how we played and some other issues,” sahred Sampson. “The first game we fought hard but in the next two games we have some takeaways we will need to work on along with better execution moving forward. We will build and look forward to the rematch October 10 at Black Hills.”
