Harbor Heights residents Fred and Debbie Paparelli have thoroughly enjoyed the convenience of the neighborhood and the wonderful amenities available in the community. After relocating from a house in Long Island, New York, they weren’t sure what to expect with transitioning their family and pets to apartment living, especially a 55+ community. “I am personally kicking and screaming getting older,” shares Fred. “For us, we wanted a place with amenities and recreation, so that was a big selling point here. Our dealbreakers were that the unit had to have its own laundry and be pet-friendly, and we found all of that here.” Their cat Tig and dog Kwazzi are a big part of the family, so it was important for them to find a place to accommodate their pets.

When Fred and Debbie found Harbor Heights, they were immediately sold on the lifestyle and experience offered to the residents. The community places a great emphasis on integrating residents into the community through complimentary events and recognition. Every month, Harbor Heights awards a “Pet of the Month” to recognize the wonderful pets in the community. The lucky pet gets a treat box, a special bandana, and their photo in the community newsletter.

Additionally, Harbor Heights hosts many events and recently put on the Pup Parade in partnership with Mud Bay to get pet owners and animal lovers together. They recognize the integral role pets play in people’s lives, especially those that may be moving into the community after losing a spouse. At Harbor Heights, you and your pets become part of the bigger family and can begin a fantastic community of your own right within your home.

At Harbor Heights, Fred and Debbie have found the connection and stimulation they needed to keep their retirement fun and interesting. With the mountains, coast, forests, and city all within driving distance, not to mention the local amenities in downtown Olympia, some just a walk away, the Paparelli’s couldn’t ask for more in their new home. “We kept thinking, ‘What are we going to do when we retire?’” shares Fred. “After retiring, we wanted external stimulation to keep us going, and that’s why we like living here. There is such a nice selection of places to go, especially with our dog.”

Owning pets keeps many people active and social throughout their lives. Fred and Debbie take daily walks to keep themselves and their dog Kwazzi happy, and with that, they have quickly been able to develop relationships with other residents in the building. “I love the fact that we can have our pets here,” says Debbie. “Harbor Heights is a very cohesive community where everyone is able to get to know each other. If you want to make friends, I’d say get a dog! It is the best icebreaker to meet people.”
