Air Handlers, Inc. was formed in 1967 when its first-generation owners, Bruce and Pat Shattuck, purchased and combined Ashwell Sheet Metal and Schaefer Sheet Metal in Olympia, explains Donna. “Mike, quite literally, grew up on the shop floors,” she says. “He has worked at Air Handlers since his teen years and in 1996 he and I took over the company as second generation.”
The company became an authorized Lennox dealer in 1971 because Bruce and Pat resonated with their partnership-style corporate attitude. Today, after more than five decades, Mike and Donna are recognized for that longstanding relationship. “Celebrating 50 years this past year as a Lennox dealer really hit home with us that the choice our family made to create Air Handlers and operate it as a true family business was the right choice,” says Donna.

All businesses adapt and grow with the times, but at Air Handlers, they did so thoughtfully and with great care. “Our business model is very easy,” says Donna, “we treat customers as we would wish to be treated ourselves. It is clear the demographic of our customers are the people who want to build a lasting, trusting relationship and care about our longevity and reputation for doing things with quality and integrity.”

Mike manages their commercial and custom sheet metal divisions and Donna handles the residential and service departments. Most importantly, they touch every project that comes through the door.

Air Handlers is a forced-air heating and cooling contractor that still utilizes a full custom sheet-metal shop. Back in the day, explains Donna, HVAC contractors arose from tinsmiths building their own ductwork. Nowadays most residential shops don’t fabricate and must buy their ductwork prefabricated and adjust it to fit the project.
Air Handlers can fabricate any ductwork necessary, and Mike also specializes in custom sheet metal projects, including roofing fascia and trim or specialized automotive fabrication. “Mike is quite the visionary and customers are amazed at his abilities to produce their rough concepts,” says Donna. His metal work includes hand-fabrication of custom range hoods, backsplashes, roofing accessories, counter- and tabletops, automotive body restoration pieces and unique custom pieces to meet unique, out-of-the-ordinary, needs.

“I think the secret to our success is simply our reputation for doing the right thing, concentrating on quality and personal service,” says Donna. “It’s a sad fact that mom and pop companies are fading, and big business means less personal service and more disorganization. Recent years have seen a huge change in complexity of equipment and complexity in the bidding marketplace, not to mention so many complexities caused by COVID-19 shortages.”
