South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) is now one step closer to offering its Bachelor in Applied Science (BAS) degree in Craft Beverage Management and Quality Assurance.
The proposed degree was approved today by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. SPSCC now awaits approval from the Northwest Commission on College and Universities (NWCCU) accreditation body.
Pending approval from NWCCU, the BAS program is expected to launch in Fall Quarter 2023. The degree is the first of its kind and will prepare students to move into management in the craft beverage industry.
The program is designed for students who have already earned an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) or AAS-Transfer degree, especially in the fields of business and natural science.
“We’re delighted to have the ability to offer a BAS degree at the college. This degree will help build the workforce of the craft beverage industry,” said Amy Warren, Dean of Workforce Education and Food and Beverage Arts at SPSCC.
“Our hope is to build this program to reach a national audience as it is quite unique in its content and instructional delivery model. In the BAS program, students will learn what it takes to be successful in business management and quality assurance. This program will give students a quicker path to a higher paying career in the industry.”
SPSCC’s Associate in Applied Science – Transfer (AAS-T) degree for Craft Brewing and Distilling will also evolve with the launch of the BAS program.
“We will continue to offer our AAS-T degree as those students’ focus will be primarily on the science and technical skills required for the craft,” Warren added.
The college first announced it would apply to offer the BAS degree in December 2021. SPSCC is the first college or university in the country to offer a degree program that is inclusive of all three crafts of brewing, distilling, and cider making.
