Scott and Laurie knew when their daughter graduated from high school that it was time for a change. They previously owned a home with 10 acres of land near Rochester, which meant a great deal of landscaping and time spent keeping the home well-maintained. “It was a lot of upkeep,” shares Laurie. “My husband had back surgery last year and a heart attack four years ago. As we age, things happen, and we decided that we weren’t going to keep doing this with the house anymore.” Home maintenance can be extremely demanding on top of a regular work schedule, and comes with many hidden costs such as pest control, roof replacement, and appliance repair. After moving in, Laurie and Scott quickly felt a huge weight lift off of their shoulders. Plus, now we get to spend time doing what we want instead of having to schedule our life around all of the chores we used to have to do.” It feels like they have been able to get a lot of their life back now that they no longer have to worry about keeping up with the demands of a homeownership.

Scott has been working at Hardel Builders Center near downtown Olympia. Now that they live at Harbor Heights, Scott has been able to cut his commute time down significantly, which has freed up his day so much more. Laurie wanted to find a job specifically in downtown because of its convenience. She started working at Crain’s Total Office before they moved into Harbor Heights and has been thrilled with the quick drive time. “We are each within about a mile or so from our work, which is huge considering weather conditions and gas prices,” says Laurie. Working and living so close has given Laurie and Scott much more freedom in their lives to make time for the activities and hobbies they enjoy.
When they aren’t working, Scott and Laurie still stay active and busy with their free time by seeing the sights around downtown and exploring the local eateries and businesses in the area. “It is really pretty at night, so we walk almost every night downtown,” Laurie shares. “We love walking around Capitol Lake and to the new restaurants for dinner. I especially like Row and Budd Bay Café, which are both so close.”
After spending countless evenings checking out the local scene, they have quickly discovered that there is so much more to do downtown than they realized. They feel like they are much more active than they ever were before now that they are living at Harbor Heights. “It’s going to give us a longer life,” says Laurie. “Some people think that being in a 55+ community is for your last years, but I think we are saving ourselves from being beat up and getting older by moving here. We can retire without retirement.”
