In a non-conference season opening game Saturday, September 4, 2021 the Black Hills girls soccer team defeated visiting River Ridge 4-0 in Tumwater to begin the high school fall sports season.

The Wolves (1-0) scored three times in the first half with goals from Janey Do, (8’) Mia Oniskey, (15’) and Jessica Bender (30’). Kennedy Reykdal (50’) scored in the second half for Black Hills.

Wolves Head Coach Ty Johnson was pleased with the performance of his team. “We have about 30 girls out and a strong junior class who played well,” stated Johnson. “Mia Oniskey is our captain and plays solid for us and really leads the team well.” Black Hills hopes to be competitive in 2A EVCO play where they will challenge league champion Tumwater.

Lacey 3A River Ridge (0-1) brought a squad that is learning and rebuilding for the 2021 fall season. “I am excited for the year to have a full squad in and to be playing in new league,” Coach Kristin Liukkonen remarked. River Ridge joins the 3A South Sound Conference where it will compete with other local schools including North Thurston, Timberline and Capital. “We have a strong core and senior leadership from Karissa Leyland and Ashley Tuttle,” Liukkonen added. “This season I tell the squad to, ‘Work hard, have fun and the results will come.’”

Black Hills takes on Timberline in another non-league warmup match Tuesday, September 7 and then travels to Rochester on Thursday, September 9 to open 2A EVCO play. River Ridge heads to Lakes September 7 and then hosts Peninsula Thursday, September 9 at 7 p.m. at South Sound Stadium.
