We see far too many people suffering from knee pain due to extra weight. If you lose 10 pounds that is equal to 40 pounds of pressure removed off of your knees, which makes a world of difference if you have achy, stiff knees. Now we do treat lots of knees at Penrose Physical Therapy in Lacey, and many times physical therapy is the answer. Weight loss is not magic; it is science but every body can be unique and there is some art to figuring out your body. And unfortunately, there have been some awful scams and quick schemes that only result in people gaining the weight back. I finally found a solid program that works. We coached a group of 25 this past winter and the results by in large were great! We had many people lose 5-10 inches (1 inch off the belly/waist equals 1% of fat loss). This program focuses on fat loss and not just weight as we don’t want to lose muscle. And most importantly people felt better and reported less ache in their joints and improved energy. I have checked in with many of them 5 months later and many were still following the life style principles and still losing weight. The common thing I kept hearing was “I am just so glad that I feel so much better.” It is amazing that when you really start eating right how the inflammation goes down everywhere and you have better energy. My husband figured out by eating this way he eliminated the afternoon lethargic feeling due to cutting out pastas and breads. When he re-introduced it, he felt very tired.  He also noticed decreased swelling.  So now he can make better choices and avoid those foods. The menu plan is delicious and inspiring; it may show you how to really enjoy those wonderful vegetables. That was one of my favorite things about this program. I learned great recipes and alternatives to things I loved but needed to replace. For instance, I love pancakes! However, the carbs and sugars are too high, so I learned a new recipe: 1 banana, 2 eggs and a ¼ tsp of baking powder.  That is for 1 person/1 serving. You must spray your nonstick pan with coconut oil and cook slowly or it will be a sticky mess – trust me. And then I used blue berries mashed up to put on top. They were delicious AND healthy. I knew that I had to find healthier ways of cooking that tasted delicious. Food is to be enjoyed and can’t be about deprivation or no one will stick to it.  I kept thinking “this is not a good time” and “I’m too busy.” There is never a good time. I have three boys, a business, a spouse and a very full and active life. If I can do this, you can do this.
