The Timberline Blazers beat North Thurston High School 21-20 Monday, February 22, 2021 in a showdown of Lacey Rivals at South Sound Stadium. Timberline scored first and led 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter. North Thurston fought back in the last quarter including a fourth down tipped reception for a touchdown with 3:45 to make the score 21-20. The Rams were not able to make the point after kick and Timberline ran out the clock to secure the win.

James Jones, Timberline first-year head coach, was happy his team was able to play and complete with the uncertainty going into the year due to the COVID-19 epidemic. “The kids have been resilient and worked so hard,” Jones noted after the win. “We were up and then they came back and Thurston just did a great job of grinding it out and keeping the ball away from us in the fourth quarter. Then on that last drive we were able to do what we needed to do.”

Terry Shaw, North Thurston’s head coach, was proud of the character of his team. “We have a majority of guys who have never seen varsity play before and we were right there in the end,” Shaw remarked. “We have a lot in front of us that is good stuff. I am so proud of them and I am proud of how they hung together. We are excited to get back at it this Friday against Capital.”

North Thurston (0-1, SSC) hosts Capital (0-1, SSC) Friday at 8 p.m. at South Sound Stadium in SSC play. Timberline (1-0, SSC) will travel to Ingersol Stadium at 7 p.m. to take on 4A Olympia (0-1 SSC) who joined the other local SSC teams for the modified WIAA Phase One Season. In the other pairing of SSC teams, Yelm (1-0, SSC) plays at 4:30 p.m. against River Ridge (1-0, SSC) at South Sound Stadium.
