For Washington State residents, a new insurance option is available to those who need genetic counseling services. Beginning September 1, 2020, Genetic Support Foundation (GSF) can take Molina Healthcare.

“This is a great solution for so many who were previously unable to access the genetic healthcare they need,” says Katie Stoll, executive director of GSF and certified genetic counselor. “We’re happy to partner with Molina Healthcare of Washington and are grateful to be able to serve more patients.”

Common reasons to see a genetic counselor include hereditary cancer risk, prenatal and pregnancy counseling, pediatric concerns such as developmental delay, and adult concerns such as heart disease and diabetes.

Genetic counseling is covered by Medicaid and by most commercial insurance plans. These insurances also cover Telehealth appointments.

GSF is “In-Network” with:

  • Aetna
  • First Choice Health
  • Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington Options, Inc
  • Premera
  • Regence BlueShield
  • Community Health Plan of Washington
  • Molina (beginning Sept. 1, 2020)

GSF is committed to bringing independent genetic counseling services to their greater community and beyond. GSF supports H.R.3235 – the Access to Genetic Counselor Services Act of 2019. This Act, if passed, would allow for genetic counselors to be reimbursed for medically necessary genetic counseling services under part B of the Medicare program.

GSF recognizes the importance of equitable access to genetic counseling and testing services. In addition to securing contracts with more insurance providers such as Molina and supporting change in congress, GSF also offers a Charity Care Program.
